Fall in the Fabulous Fraser Valley

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall”.
 Oscar Wilde

Autumn signals the end of warm summer days and long leisurely evenings.  We welcome the natural changes the new season brings us – shorter days that begin and end with a noticeable chill in the air. Autumn is also all about the colours of the season – the brilliant hues of orange, rust, gold and multiple shades of green as the trees shed their covering of leaves, carpeting the ground in a colorful kaleidoscope.

Did you know that in North America this transitional season between summer and winter is referred to as “fall” (as in falling leaves) whereas “autumn” is how most Europeans call this time of year? Whether you call it “fall” or “autumn” it remains a favourite season for many, including me.

What sights, smells and events do you associate with autumn? Is it the ever so popular scent of pumpkin spice or does a corn maze or pumpkin patch put you in a festive fall mood?

Or maybe it’s beer? Octoberfest is a hops-filled celebration that began in Germany as a commemoration for an 1800’s royal wedding and is still a popular activity across the Bavarian country in autumn. Today you can dress up in your lederhosen or dirndl and attend Octoberfest events held in towns and cities across North America.

So grab a sweater, pack up the family and experience the sights and smells of autumn in the Fraser Valley. Pick that perfect pumpkin, get lost in a corn maze or simply walk the Vedder River trail and experience all that the fall season has to offer.
